check me out, delivering on my promise to keep sewing…very excited to share the latest pattern from womenswear mastermind, april rhodes! you may know april from her outrageously popular staple dress pattern, and you have seen her work before on this blog both here and here (and my visit to her mom’s adorable shop here), with many undocumented but well-loved projects also hanging in my closet. april has a wonderful niche in the women’s sewing pattern community, wherein she designs highly flattering, wearable, customizable patterns that are also very beginner friendly. hers were some of my first patterns used when i began sewing for myself, and it was so rewarding and empowering to produce cute garments efficiently and without confusion or rage. even now as a more confident seamstress, i return to her patterns again and again because they produce high quality, on trend products without any hassle. her latest pattern, the popover poncho, is no exception! seamstresses can expect the same clear, simple, thorough instructions (with diagrams and photographs) full of tips and tricks to quickly turn out something they will love to wear.
as new, exhausted, exasperated parents, we often hear, “kids don’t come with an instruction manual.” ain’t that the truth. every baby is different, even if as a parent you are the same. every one of them requires their own individual tool kit, and adding a new one to the fray can definitely throw that equilibrium out of whack. there’s not much we can do as bystanders to aid growing families in this transitional period other than offer our love and support…and this bag. well you guys, here it is…the premier of my women’s clothing line! honestly it feels a little anticlimactic to me because i completed these garments and mostly photographed them almost a month ago. i had plans for pattern tweaking and re-photographing, but honestly, i had to cut my losses. i am not a professional designer, pattern drafter, model or photographer, nor am i expecting a gross influx of business based on the desire for women’s clothing made by yours truly. i spent a while mulling over these pieces, planning other pieces for the collection, even getting so far as a few new muslins, but i decided to just start small and see how it goes. i finally overcame the hurculean task of photographing and creating etsy listings, so i thought i would follow up on the old blog about each piece in a bit more detail. i really do love them all. we just got back from a lovely vacation to san diego, which was a nice opportunity to disconnect for an extended period. david grew up there, so we had the pleasure of catching up with a lot of old friends and their little ones. we just made it in a window of good health for all of us (i stopped barfing a day before we left home, reese started the morning we returned, nice!), and the kids are juuuuust getting old enough to travel more seamlessly. it really was restorative (lots of car knitting!). i don’t know about you other creative folk, but i really dislike stagnation, and i’m definitely feeling the urge to take a few steps back and redefine my creative goals for the coming months. for creative people with extremely limited time, that task can be challenging and i’m not exactly sure when it might happen, but i’m acknowledging it. changes coming, you heard it here first! well, here it is guys. the whole ensemble. are you dying of cute? do you understand why i almost suffocate him daily and he has to fight me off? will you stand behind me if i do unintentionally smother him? this is my evidence. i couldn’t help it. could you? soak it in, because there might never be another photo of the whole thing on at once. this took a LOT of cookies.
