stripey peplum

i jumped on the peplum craze full force in the last couple of weeks, which can only mean it’s probably on the way out since i tend to be behind the times (to put it mildly).  anyway, i think they’re cute, and it turns out they’re fairly easy to make.  i ordered quite a bit of this striped jersey from girl charlee awhile back thinking it was something else.  i’m not crazy about it, but it’s very thin, incredibly soft, and i’ll never let stripes go to waste, so it seemed a perfect medium for some peplum experimentation. native fringe tank

today i present to you the first piece of my austin/nyc handmade wardrobe!  my trip is actually ending tomorrow, and i’m proud to say that i have worn 100% handmade items for the duration (except pants/shorts…maybe next season).  this was a vague goal of mine several months ago, and i succeeded with a few preexisting items, mixed in with some new projects.  this tank is particularly special to me because it has such a great backstory. happy labor day!  i hope you’re all enjoying a restful long weekend, or just regular weekend if you’re not a labor day celebrator.  i was just organizing my photos and realized i have to pick up my project sharing a bit or i’m going to get really behind.  so, first and foremost, i wanted to show you a few more in the lineup of my goldie locks tank making spree, because i said i would:

shirting tova

you guys would be proud of me…over the past week or so, i have been devoting maybe half of my sewing time to art fair inventory.  it’s creating an irrational fear that if i spend so much time making pouches and bags, i won’t have anything to blog about.  but in fact, there’s no reason i can’t also share those projects with you (and maybe you’re sick of seeing my squinty face in a new dress every week anyway), and my self sewing fever hasn’t fully subsided, so i’m accumulating a steady backlog of projects.  so today, squinty face in a new dress it is.  i’m sorry; there are no clouds in this part of the country. grainline split back tank

guys, i have officially caught the self sewing fever.  notice, i’m not referring to it as “selfish” anymore.  some very interesting things are happening as a result.  first, my wardrobe is growing faster than it has in several years.  i’m not a big clothes person, but my fever is resulting in at least one garment per week…far more than i’d ever shop for.  it’s the most productive fever ever.  second, i’m becoming a better dresser.  similar to when i began sewing more confidently for the kids, it’s been a weird transition into realizing i actually can wear what i sew, rather than treat all the pieces as ugly, failed experiments.  i have to consciously divert my attention each morning from my typical ratty tee shirt and $5 jersey gaucho pants that haven’t been cool since i bought them in 2005 that compose my summer uniform and say to myself no, you are a respectable adult, and you can wear this sweet linen shirt hanging in your closet with the aligned stripes and contrast binding.  now put it on and go stare at a waterfall, why don’t you. a whole lot of dresses

IMG_2175 and one tank.  i know it’s a tall order, but after a little thought and a lot of sewing, i’ve decided to blog about all my jersey dresses in one giant post rather than split them into several shorties.  i already have a few new garments finished and even photographed, and i don’t want the old blog to get backed up as i flit feverishly from one project to the next as i’m prone to do. as usual, i’m telling myself there isn’t a whole lot to say about these dresses, but i know i always manage to find plenty to say about everything.  so, if you get bored, you can just look at the pictures (with a higher than average amount of photo bombing). a month in review

my friends, what a fine month it was.  countertops cleared after one year of accumulating piles, cars cleaned and serviced, blades sharpened, walls painted, wardrobe multiplied, books read, faraway destinations traveled, old friends visited, new friends made.  a little business, a *lot* of pleasure.  a month long vacation is luxurious by any standard…i really vacillated over whether or not to write a roundup post at all because it makes me self conscious.  but, i really made it count, you guys…i don’t think a moment was wasted.  and i want you to know there was no sloth to be had.  the immediate and self-perceived dire needs of toddlers quickly erase any memory of relaxation, so join me in a walk down memory lane as i recall what it was like to have a month to do WHATEVER I WANTED. what happens in vegas

i’d describe my current state as mildly discombobulated.  the little bosses are back in business and have been dishing out orders for a solid week now, but the transition was gradual as their return was marked with a family reunion and my folks stuck around until early this morning.  i actually have an entire post written to summarize the past month, but the pictures from my various adventures are in all different places and it was starting to really stress me out to get that post squared away as time continued to tick by without showing my face here.

darling ranges birthday dress

IMG_1641happy birthday to me!  don’t worry, i wrote this monster yesterday, because today i’m doing…NOTHING!  this, you guys, is a very special dress for many reasons.  it’s a dress i wore to commemorate my final birthday in my twenties, the most complicated garment i’ve made for myself so far (intermediate, heyo!), and created with a pattern and a fabric with unique and memorable origins.  i have a lot to say about this dress, but i think i have enough photos to break it up into manageable pieces.  where to begin…
