art fair preview #3!

inventory

well you guys, art fair is nearly upon us!  and we are all but ready.  the photo above doesn’t even include teri’s stuff…so much for being short on inventory (booth is 4×8′!).  after returning back to my sewing room and getting my bearings about me a few weeks ago, i blazed through the several remaining projects i had cut.  fortunately, my mom had an extended visit with us, so i was able to move very quickly in spite of a wave of fevers and malaise moving through our family and reese developing severe insomnia (not in that order).  it was basically intolerable for two weeks, but seems to have mostly resolved by sticking the kids in the same room at night.  now there’s literally nothing they don’t do together.  anyway, i initially thought i would regroup and do more sewing (boy pants?  more home decor or accessories?  more jersey?), but i took about a week’s break or so to attend to the business side of selling crafts.  turns out, that’s quite a task if you’re starting from scratch!  after a fair amount of research, filing, registering, establishing, and branding, i’m happy to say i am legally open for business.  i can even take credit cards! march purge

march

did i tell you guys i had a lot of projects planned?  see exhibit a, above.  march has been a busy month finishing up lingering projects (5, 6), whipping up some last minute ones (2, 4, 7), and just generally staying busy in the craft room.  i accumulated so much stuff over the past few weeks that i’ve decided to roll it all into one long post, because it was too hard to parse out categories vs. gifts without ruining surprises as they travel to their rightful recipients.  so, break out your decoder rings for a look at what i’ve been up to… (more…)

cora’s sweater: a teeny, tiny, top down tutorial

update 1/2/15:  hello friends, i apologize for the inconvenience, but i developed some storage issues on my current server just before christmas, and my gallery archives have been disrupted as a result.  i am working as quickly as i can to permanently correct this issue, but the process has been slowed with the holidays.  i thank you for your continued patience and promise to have the tutorials back in tip top shape as soon as i possibly can.

**pattern now includes 6-9 and 9-12 month sizes…with the disclaimer that i am currently unable to test the new sizes myself.  i calculated the larger sizes based on standard measurements.  let me know how it goes!**

after so much sewing, it seemed the right time to do some knitting.  i love vacillating back and forth between the two activities, and have been enjoying some knitting relaxation time the past week, so i thought i would share this project.  look at this little thing.  isn’t it cute?  don’t you wish you could make something like that for a baby in your life?  what if i told you you can?  yes, YOU.  when i first started knitting, i made several sweaters i pieced together (poorly.  oh god, so very poorly.) before venturing into top down, seamless territory.  then i made my first seamless raglan, wondered why i had waited so long to do so, and vowed never to go back.  before me, i had a really professional looking result without any weird, bulky, uneven seams. surprise

surprise

today i thought i would share some snippets of what’s really been occupying my time and attention since christmas.  all these posts you’ve been reading?  they were carefully archived over the holidays so that i could continue posting as i worked slowly and methodically on executing a rather significant event that, in a night, has come and gone in a flash of friends, flowers, and flan. when bad things happen to good knitters.

sometimes, we take on adventurous projects with surprisingly satisfying results.  other times, we juggle a few (or several) balls too many and we set ourselves up for disaster.  is it just me, or is it sometimes hard to tell the difference at the start…sometimes even halfway through?  allow me to introduce to you my first major failure of 2013.  oh my, is it a doozy.

i love stripes.  i mean, LOVE stripes.  at least half of my clothing is striped, and i don’t immediately see any drawbacks of making the transition to a 100% striped wardrobe.  back in july, i made the below wonderful homage to stripes for my sister’s birthday, both the pattern and yarns from my favorite favorite little purveyor of yarn, quince & co, out in maine.  not only do i love their message and mission, their yarn (all 100% wool) is excellent quality and in my favorite palate of colors i’ve seen from any single manufacturer.

gift exchange

xmascollage

it’s DONE.  and i made it just in time.  you might notice the conspicuous absence of any gifts for children, namely my own children, which is precisely why everyone else’s gifts were completed on time.  given my kids don’t even yet understand what christmas is and they are royally spoiled by their grandparents, i knew they wouldn’t mind, or even notice.  so, you can expect to see a lot of kid clothes trickling onto the blog over the next few weeks as i slowly work through all the projects intended for this week.  in the meantime, check out the following tutorials and patterns that helped make this a handmade christmas! december miscellaneous

decembercollage

i just spelled miscellaneous correctly on the first try.  it’s going to be a good day.  anyhow, i realize it’s christmas eve and there are a multitude of other things i could be doing as there’s no urgency to blog.  however, i have a little window (many visitors=many babysitters) where i can toss up a quick one about some of the things keeping us busy this december and the great tutorials/patterns to go along with them. cowl countdown to christmas week 4: button up cowl

cowlcollage

welcome to the final week, everyone!  i’ve had a lot of fun knitting from the hip, so to speak, for the last few weeks, and you have no idea how happy it has made me to get your comments and feedback.  to know that i’m in some way helping people realize the joy of knitting and handmade gifting (for yourself or others) is awesome–i told you, knitting is easy!  and so rewarding!  i foresee this becoming a tradition, and i’m already thinking up other series we can complete together in this space.  suggestions strongly encouraged! cowl countdown to christmas, week 3: criss cross cable cowl

cowlcollage

so, now that you’ve got two weeks of fairly simple construction under your belt, are you ready to amp it up a little for week 3??  i knew i wanted to do some sort of cabled cowl, and after a few false starts, this is what i went with.  if you’ve never cabled before, don’t be intimidated.  i took a million one-handed pictures (that’s hard even when you’re not holding knitting needles) and am going to walk you through it every step of the way.
